Review of I, Frankenstein (2014) by Allan C — 31 Jan 2015
Wildly derivative and unoriginal, but fast paced and passably entertaining in an lame brain 12 year-old boy sort of way. When I was younger, I enjoyed watching corny Sinbad films on a Saturday morning and I wonder if this type of silly action film is the contemporary equivalent.
In any case, this film takes the Frankenstein story and inserts it into a "Night Watch" like story about an ancient secret war between good (gargoyles) and evil (demons from hell). The demons want to capture Frankenstein's monster so they can study him and unleash their own arm of the undead.
Aaron Eckhart plays the monster and actually makes a decent action hero. Bill Nighy is solid as the villainous leader of the demons and Miranda Otto does what she can as the leader of the heaven sent gargoyles.
The under used Yvonne Strahovski, who was so good in "Chuck," continues to only get dude genre pictures when she is capable of so much more. The script is weak, full of plot holes, and the dialogue is laughable (i.
E. "You're only a monster if you behave like one." or "'God will surely damn you.' 'He already did.'" Still, it's slickly made, the action is exciting if not original and Eckhart nearly rises above the ridiculous material.
It's a bad movie to be sure, but entertaining enough if you're in the right mood (meaning not a very critical mood).
