Review of I, Frankenstein (2014) by Tyler R — 27 Sep 2014
If Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters taught us anything, it's that it's okay to actually have fun with your goofy premise. That memo was clearly lost over at Lionsgate when they made I, Frankenstein, because one of the biggest issues against this film is that's way too serious.
The film follows Frankenstein's monster as he joins the present day war of gargoyles against demons. I'm all for fantasy films, and this had a cool idea at it's core, but the execution was just way, way off.
The acting is sub par, with Aaron Eckhart giving his best Batman voice and grimace, while everyone else provides enough dialogue to push the overly simplistic plot forward. The visual effects are spotty, with the demons looking absolutely ridiculous and the gargoyles looking like they were ripped from a made for television movie.
And when you throw those two together in an action sequence that involves a lot of explosions and stuff breaking, all the coherency is thrown right out of the window as soon as the film reaches present day, rendering the action a chore to sit through.
The film sets up for a sequel in the vain of Underworld, but given the terrible nature of this film and the even worse reception and box office returns, this is a film that'll thankfully be a one off.
