Review of I Drink Your Blood (1971) by Donovan D — 21 Mar 2008
With a blurb that promises LSD crazed Satanic hippies infected with rabies, I Drink Your Blood is a film that is just asking to be watched, but as you'd expect from a film with such a ludicrous pitch, I Drink Your Blood never really lives up to expectations.
With a plot as silly as it is, the filmmakers were open to a whole world of hilarious so-bad-its-good possibilities, but for the most part director David Durston and crew treat the film as if it were a serious work of the horror genre, and it fails miserably on all counts.
The premise of rabies causing zombie-like symptoms is actually quite clever, but the execution of the film is clunky to say the least - with appalling acting to boot. For the most part the film plays like the any even more low rent rethread of Night of the Living Dead, but between its cast of characters I didn't really care for and the straight faced telling of its absurd story, I Drink Your Blood doesn't come close to equalling the brilliance of Romero's cynical thesis on the violence of humanity.
I've seen quite a few zombie movies in my time, and this one is somewhere near the bottom of the list.
