Review of I Could Never Be Your Woman (2007) by Rae L — 18 Aug 2008
I really wanted to like this movie more. The normally charming Paul Rudd (Knocked Up) delivers a hammy version of a Peter Pan character that a single mother falls for.
I guess the largest problem I had with this film was it was trying to underline the age gap between the characters, when the real age gap was their maturity and almost implausible attraction to each other.
The movie also wandered into Mother-Daughter moments of disussing the physical details of womanhood I could have done without.
The mother's job made the TV industry look so simple I often wondered if it was trying to appeal to a younger audience.
The plot did stay on track and there are some enjoyable moments, but 10 years from now this won't be a movie we reference. The 80's song, "I Could Never Be Your Woman" did help lift the movie, but I always thought the song was saying something else (since it is sung by a man.) It's those slight misconnects that seem apparent throughout the film.
