Review of I Could Never Be Your Woman (2007) by Jennifer A — 20 Mar 2009
I don't get it. Was the film trying to mirror the cheesy, crap, plastic fakeness of the TV show Michelle Pfeiffer's character produces, because it certainly seems that way with the gaudily coloured and decorated sets, the cartoon-like characters and zany antics.
If so then, well, why? Putting that aside there's really not a lot to say - we've got a textbook boy-meets-older-girl story complete with cliche break up and reconciliation and lots of filler to pad out the length - Pfeiffer's daughter coming of age, the TV show and its stars.
.. Michelle Pfeiffer is game but Paul Rudd tries way too hard, his often cringeworthy kookiness embarrassing more than anything, the film's characters nonsensically laughing at him anyway when clearly no one in the audience is going to be.
Pfeiffer is of course very easy on the eyes and Jon Lovitz made me chuckle a couple of times but apart from that there's nothing that would make me recommend this. If you want a film about a 30/40-something falling for a younger man, look up Prime with Uma Thurman.
