Review of I Could Never Be Your Woman (2007) by Patrick L — 26 Feb 2013
I Could Never Be Your Woman is a film I am not sure I knew of until seeing it on dvd or it is a film I never managed to see in the cinema. Michelle Pfeiffer and Paul Rudd star as the older woman drawn to a younger man who is even more drawn to her despite her seeming more mature and older. He doesn't bat an eye when she initially tells him a number for her age, she clearly worried at his reaction. Later they both come clean about their true age and she panics and feels threatened by younger women as beautiful or more beautiful than her.
It might seem like a stretch for a viewer, indeed an admirer of Pfeiffer, to accept her in such a role but Michelle seems to be playing a real woman. Rudd's character is at times a bit trying or immature but he wins over the viewer, despite a crass scene in which he takes a candy, while a secretary is kneeling with her back to him, and tosses it into her pants.
Saoirse Ronan is a revelation as Pfeiffer's daughter, impressive in her humanity and her command of her accent. 10/10.
