Review of I Confess (1953) by L J — 20 Oct 2007
Many of Hitchcock's thrillers are variations on a theme - namely, that of murder-suspect-struggling-to-prove-his-innocence; the twist on that theme, here, is the fact that the suspect also happens to be a priest (played with admirable intensity by Monty Clift), bound by a code of conduct and forbidden to reveal the actual murderer's identity.
Clift excels, and the viewer can feel him wrestling with his conscience, his faith and his past.
A pretty solid thriller, if a little subdued, by Hitchcock standards. Being filmed in Quebec gives this film a look all its own.
