Review of I Care a Lot (2021) by Samoan62 — 21 Mar 2021
TL;DR: don't waste your time.
This is one of the most frustrating and cynical films I've ever seen. The acting is good and it kept my attention until the end, so it doesn't get a 0 from me.
The main (Pro?)tagonist is a women defrauding elderly people out of their money. The first 10 or so minutes gives you enough to really hate her and what she does. From here and throughout the rest of the film the plot events lead you to thinking that this is going to be a Scarface-like fall from grace story where our heroine is met with the consequences of her actions and experiences some sort of downfall or lesson learned, but instead the movie leaves you nothing but disgust for her and she essentially "wins" in the end without ever changing her evil ways. The writers thought a thin veneer of woke yass-queen lesbian girl power would be enough to make the audience to root for her despite her misdeeds, but unless you can relate to being a sociopathic narcissist, this fails horribly. Being a "strong woman" isn't a personality trait, and her character isn't fleshed out enough to inspire any relatability or empathy.
Constantly seeing her get past every obstacle easily without any self-reflection or change of conscience is incredibly frustrating, and in the ending where we see her succeed and become very wealthy without any remorse is an especially big slap in the face. Her being shot and killed instantly in the last minutes of the film was an unsatisfying way to give her her comeuppance and kind of insulting to the audiences' intelligence. This is one of the few films I'm mad that I finished. I wish I could have those 2 hours back.
