Review of I Can Only Imagine (2018) by Ree S — 21 Apr 2018
I've stopped going to see movies. Why? Because I just don't need to see any superheroes with angst, killer robots, or flying monkeys. Movies have the power to inspire, thrill, and move you, but so many movies just don't do it anymore. And then, and then, along comes a movie like "I can only imagine!" This movie is ostensibly about Christian music, but it doesn't come off as preachy. It is ostensibly about relationships, but it's not maudlin. It feels real. It is moving, because it is so real, and it is uplifting. I laughed, I cried, it moved me.
If you can watch this movie, and walk away not feeling touched, you are dead inside. This is how movies SHOULD be made. Okay, there's no robots, no super heroes, no assassins, it's just the story of a real man, coming to grips with his father, and their mutual frailties, and how they overcame them. It's worth seeing, and it's worth seeing again and again.
There are no special effects. There are no CGI overkill moments. It's just a story, that will touch you.
