Review of I Can Do Bad All By Myself (2009) by Jabari C — 29 Nov 2009
Perry continues with his same dry plot of buffoonery. It was as though he watched the movie "Bamboozled" and walked away with the lesson that he can make a lot of money making poor films that capitalize on the worst stereotypes of African-Americans. The story is full of holes that any person with an 8th grade education could pick out. 1) Why would a pastor tell a single young woman without a stable job to take in three children and a male drifter that the pastor just met in the same day? Wouldn't wisdom say, "hm, we should check this guy out before we have him move in there"? Of course it worked out in the end that the man wouldn't a hair on a child and would actually defend them to the end. 2) When the grandmother died and was cremated with no identification, how did the pastor and sister of the church rightly identify that ashes of the woman were her remains?
I don't know how people walk away from these movies with a renewed sense of faith. The first half of the movie seemed to be a direct slap at anyone of calls him or herself a Christian. The Madea character is the worst I've ever seen in my life. When the opportunity was there to really show the sixteen year old how to pray, a complete joke was made of it all.
I know that I sound like a hater of Perry, but in all honesty, I am lover of quality films. I have not heard a single person say, "I have to buy this Tyler Perry film!" Never. Has anyone even bothered to ask why not even one of this multi-millionaire's movies has been up for a major award? Kudos to him for finding his groove; it's just a shame that it's akin to a drill going deep into the souls of black folk.
I look forward to when he truly does kill off the Madea character and all her relatives. They are not needed and truly do take away from any sensible plot that his movies have to redeem.
