Review of I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016) by L F — 02 Jan 2017
I was not feeling this one. I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (longest title ever eh?) is a horror film that has a ton of atmosphere and setup, but the plot is dull and the lead isn't ever that interesting nor did I ever actually care about the outcome.
Lily (Ruth Wilson) is a hospice nurse that comes to the house of best selling horror novelist Iris Blum (Paula Prentiss) who is nearing death herself. Lily find the house super creepy and old with it emitting strange sounds.
Iris is out of it and keeps calling Lily by the name of "Polly" who Lily finds out from the estate manager Mr. Waxcap (Bob Balaban) that Polly is one of the characters in Iris' novels. We soon find Lilly uncovering the secrets of the house and also what haunts it.
The movies main lead is just unlikeable. Wilson tries to bring a creepy vibe, but we get so little interaction with her and anyone of importance that even when the very few scares come up its like, "Ok so what?" The plot itself is super simple.
Basically we get to the point of finding out Iris based her novel on an actual murder that happened in the house. And here's a rare one for me since I normally won't do spoilers, but SPOILER ALERT.
.......Lily dies from fear of seeing the ghost at the end....it's not like she was killed by the ghost itself. The ghost literally see's her and is like, "Oh don't mind me just walking around and shit.
" And boom Lily is such a scaredy cat she dies on the spot....and thats literally the only somewhat creepy moment in the movie. It's a good looking movie, but lacks substance. It'll probably be one of those easily forgettable ones down the line.
Skip this one unless you're dying to see it unfold for an hour and a half.
