Review of I Am Sam (2014) by Cindy C — 03 Aug 2010
"I am Sam" was a pleasant little surprise for the genre. The movie was unexpectantly heart touching, and kind of cute. The main character, Sam, played by Sean Penn was the highlight of the movie, as he played a man who's IQ is that of a seven year old, in a way that it's almost impossible not to want to give him a big hug! In "I Am Sam", one of the notable elements is the many references and usage of The Beatles music or facts.
Luckily, the movie doesn't use the music to completely control the flow of the plot (like what I've heard "Across the Universe" did) but instead songs are put intelligently at key scenes in the film.
I will say, "I Am Sam" has its little problems and issues that hold it back from becoming a truly remarkable film. One being, like mentioned, how they made the law side of child custody much easier than reality.
The movie can become slow, and it's not a movie for everyone (for example: Beatles haters). It's not an award winner, but "I Am Sam" is a good way to spend an hour fourty.
