As a person living successfully with a mental illness, I would like to recommend the movie ?I Am Sam?, starring Sean Penn, and Michelle Pfeiffer. The movie starts off with Sam (Sean Penn), a person l who has a developmental disability who had a baby with his girl friend who decided to leave him with the baby when they left the hospital.

He had a peer support group which helped him take good care of his daughter as she grew up. Sam eventually got in trouble when a police man thought he was paying for a prostitute, as a result it lead the police to think that he may not be a good parent.

They went to trial after they met Michelle Pfeiffer, (who played his attorney) in order to fight to keep custody of his daughter. At first he lost custody of his daughter to the foster system, at one time it looked as if she might end up getting adopted out.

I recommend you watch the movie to see what the outcome is. In summary, he realized he couldn?t do it alone. He taught people that he was a good father, and demonstrated that he could be a better father than most.

I believe Sean Penn did a wonderful job in being the actor a person with a developmental disability. He made Michelle?s character fight for him while providing her with an opportunity to reevaluate her own life.

?I am Sam? is a great experience to learn that one can take care of one another as long as you have good support in your life.
