Review of I Am Sam (2014) by Dave H — 22 Nov 2010
Spicoli recycles Raymond Babbit almost verbatim, right down to the too-short trouser cuffs. Ever before Tropic Thunder came along, it was easy to be cynical about stuff like this which seems designed piece by piece to win Oscars from the outside in, rather than based on a desire to simply tell a good story from the inside out.
Repetitively and obviously melodramatic by rote, yet itâ(TM)s well intentioned and raises some topical issues and Samâ(TM)s friends are awesome and Fanning and Dern are much less cringe-worthy than normal.
I just wish they hadnâ(TM)t gone full retard.
