Review of I Am Sam (2014) by David B — 09 Oct 2012
Every device of the movie's art is designed to convince us Lucy must stay with Sam, but common sense makes it impossible to go the distance with the premise. Contrived, manipulative and shamelessly sentimental, this film is notable for the courageous reach of Sean Penn, who to be honest is the best thing about the film, his performance is quite simply brilliant, proving to be one of the best actors in his range.
It's funny but not really in comical way, it's more of the case your laughing at it and not with it. Films like this can work but in this case it doesn't. The script seems characterless (Aside from Penn's) and really, really boring.
But it is watchable, unless there's nothing better on, just take a few minutes to watch this. Some will cry but my eye's were dry. Only watch this for Penn's performance and not the story.
..you know know it ends when the film starts.
