Review of I Am Sam (2014) by Patricia G — 07 May 2013
Very touching with love at it's core, a natural father and daughter story. The tension between Sam and the outside world is pressed upon the audience rising the emotional level. The passing of Sam's mental capacity by Lucy's knowledge is hard to watch and a purposeful over reach to have viewers feel connected.
Sloppy when it's meant to be cute, except in the case of the importance of honesty. Heartwarming but again overreaching. Sean Penn clearly did his research and is obedient in staying in character and seeming handicap.
Eventually Penn's and Pheifer's characters bloom together, but her relationship with her son might be too much for the dramatic aspect. Wiest's character should have been either strongly portrayed or lef out completely, not just briefly-dramatically involved.
Ending was too prolonged and should have been swift rather than sketched around to end up jumping to a fairy tail hault of a conclusion.
