Review of I Am Sam (2014) by Hayden P — 22 Aug 2018
In retrospect its extremely offensive to portray the differently abled in such a way. Obviously it was not the movie's intention to be insensitive but at the same time they should have had the foresight to know that this would be perceived as manipulative and vastly crass to attempt a portrayal of the life of a differently abled man.
On a purely film level its not horrible; the shot composition flowed well, the pacing was adequate, and the Beatles cover soundtrack was refreshing; however where this movie fails is the story and dialogue's insensitive conclusion of the struggles of mentally challenged persons.
In a way it's good that this sub genre of drama died out with I Am Sam because the subject matter has been deemed very inappropriate to comment on in such a manner.
