What makes I am legend so good is that it is brilliantly subtle, giving room for Will Smith to thrive and give a great performance. It chooses not to be a stereotypical zombie movie that isn't primarily based on blood splatter action sequences.
It isn't perfect I grant. Yes the Lone Ranger Will Smith performance of him roaming the empty 'zombie' ridden New York alone with his dog does get kind of boring after a while, and the ending is rather anti-climatic; but all in all it has a great Will Smith performance, interesting storyline, pretty good action sequence and a scene to which even grown men may shed a tear to.
In summary it is a pretty good tense action thriller anchored by a brilliant display from Will Smith.
