Review of I Am Legend (2007) by Dusty L — 12 Apr 2015

This film's been around for a few years now, so we all know the ending's a bit annoying - did it really have to end that way? And the alternative ending (on BluRay versions) is nice, but a bit silly.

It opens well, as Robert Neville (Smith) has to follow his dog, Sam, into a dark building when it chases an animal. This scene, where we're given brief glimpses of the monsters Neville's up against, is easily the most tense part of the film.

Sadly though, it feels like someone put George Lucas in charge of the CGI, as once we get a full view of the bad guys they're just not as scary as if they'd used real actors. But hey, this is still a good film.

It makes a lot more sense than previous film adaptations (Last Man on Earth, The Omega Man) and Will Smith's performance is pretty good. Maybe, someday, the film-makers will bring out a new version of this movie where they just fine-tune the CGI, and possibly turn this flick into an outright classic.
