Review of I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932) by Thomas D — 18 Oct 2005
I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG.
Mervyn LeRoy, 1932.
10/10!
I got the same sort of feeling from this that I got from the absolutely incredible Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
BATTLE OF ALGIERS.
Gillo Pontecervo, 1965.
10/10!
Before this, the only two war movies that ever impressed me were Apocalypse Now (Redux) and Full Metal Jacket, AN being my preference. Battle of Algiers blows Coppola's masterpiece out of the water with a friggin' warhead. Has probably the best end scene ever.
BARRY LYNDON.
Stanley Kubrick, 1975.
7.5/10.
Not my favorite Kubrick picture, but does nail it in several places. Costume, art direction, and all that: this movie is loaded with style. It's not lacking in the acting or script department too much. I guess the real problem is that it sort of drones on. A lot of movies three hours in length will do that.
Speaking of 3-hour films, I'll take this oppurtunity to mention The Lord of the Rings movies. I did enjoy these movies, but the whole fantasy thing is a bit of an acquired taste. These movies are robbed of so much quality when removed from the theaters. In the theaters, these movies made me nervous. I was, quite literally, at the edge of my seat. These are probably the only movies in which I didn't hold massive length against them.
