Review of Hysteria (2011) by Gavin S — 15 Sep 2013
A perfectly pleasant and charming film set in Victorian London, telling the story of Dr. Mortimer Granville. Dr. Granville (a fine Hugh Dancy) is a progressive medical practitioner, who ends up working in a practice run by Jonathan Pryce relieving women's 'hysteria'.
Cue a bunch of sly droll British jokes, most coming from a spot on perfect Rupert Everett who steals every scene he's in as Granville's rich friend and inventor. Also great work by Maggie Gyllenhaal as the feisty woman's rights/social activist daughter of Pryce's character.
Cue a romantic comedy that has just enough of both to be enjoyable without being schmaltzy or gross. Given the subject matter, it's impressive they kept it pretty polite. A buzz-worthy film.
