Review of Hyde Park on Hudson (2012) by C H — 27 Mar 2013
Difficult to know what to make of this movie. Bill Murray is good but the film focuses on more than one plot element that makes it unclear what the point of the story is. The story is told from the perspective of FDR's mistress (one of them) which is ok but the narration by this character becomes irritating.
It's as if the director couldn't work out how to tell the story by the actors acting! There's humour in the story but, at times, it seems to be at the expense of respect - not for the "polygamous" FDR - but for the other personalities.
The portrayal of the events just doesn't seem authentic at times. I'm not sure how accurate this portrayal is to actual historical events. Although FDR's affair with Daisy, the narrator, are based on her journal and letters discovered after her death, this is not mentioned in the movie.
Overall, it just didn't ring true. Wait for DVD with this one.
