Review of Hyde Park on Hudson (2012) by Alan W — 22 Oct 2012
In short, King's Speech II but probably that isnt fair. The comparison with the Oscar winning film last year is inevitable because FDR is a bit like the other side of the coin from KGVI. The main problem is that it feels like a film of 2 halves that never really gel.
There is the private life of (and the women surrounding) FDR and then there is the King and Queen of England's visit. And while the latter feels dramatic and intense and thus very much more watchable, the former just come across as a bit gossipy (or even a tad creepy at times).
So while the film looks great and it has impressively show-offy performances (for me: Murray and Colman are the standouts), in the end, it's nothing more than a nice, fluffy film.
