Review of Hyde Park on Hudson (2012) by Kj P — 08 Jan 2013
The most likeable and entertaining aspect of this film was its charm and light humor. With that said, it lacked the weight of a true drama which the history behind this film contained plenty of. Michell did not inform the viewer about or refer to the true events as often as he should have, leaving them to focus on the dainty story line and sub-pair acting.
There were moments of emotional insight that were brief and fleeting, but were never developed to the full potential of the scenes those moments were a part of. Bill Murray never found his rhythm it seemed, changing the way he approached the role throughout.
Michell took a leap of faith by releasing this film during award season, and metaphorically took a dive. He made a weak biopic and let it be overshadowed by another that was successful at accomplishing the balance between drama and comedy that it tried to accomplish: Hitchcock.
Instead, Michell should have let this film be showed during primetime on the Lifetime channel where it truly belongs.
