Review of Hustlers (2019) by Alex1127 — 02 Jul 2022
+ Lots of good performances, especially Lopez, who is excellent, and even the cameos.
+ Visually interesting, cool shots and lighting etc.
- The way the moral ambiguity is handled here is frustrating. Not a fan of how the film often seems to excuse forming and running an assault and robbery ring as an acceptable response to trauma and hardship, or that it's sometimes written as a fun bonding experience among friends. A more critical framing and tone would have been appropriate. On the other hand, if the filmmakers wanted to commit to going the other way, trivialize the many wrongdoings, that could have worked too. Instead, the film seems confused about its own intent in portraying these events, and that makes it a much less satisfying watch than it deserved.
- Too many montages and slow motion sequences. The pacing feels off as a result. Dialogue and further character development would have been more interesting than the sixth "gang enters a club in slow-mo" sequence.
