Review of Hustle & Flow (2005) by Tiffany F — 12 Mar 2008
HUSTLE & FLOW (2005).
Directed by Craig Brewer.
Starring Terrence Howard, Anthony Anderson, Taraii P. HensonA pimp who doesnt like being a pimp decides to give it a shot at reaching is dream of becoming a rap singer in Hustle & Flow. Do you need to like rap to enjoy this film ? Certainly not. Im not a fan of rap, I will enjoy whats good, like in any music genre but I hate most of it, yet I love Hustle & Flow. What makes this film different from others like, lets say, 8 Mile or Get Rich or Die Tryin' ? Well, it is its honesty and the actors talent. Terrence Howard plays the wannabe rapper and he is as strong as an actor can be. He has layers, he is vulnerable, yet he does what he he has to do for is bread and to get by.He is surrounded by two procurers, strong Taryn Manning and Taraii Henson, one of them is pregnant. He runs into a high school friend and soon they try to record a demo that he intends to give to another dude who went to high school with them and managed to make it big.Hustle & Flow has genuine characters and has a lot to say about the rap industry. All the more surprising is that it was made by a white guy who seems to know a lot about music. The songs are actually quite good. This was a big surprise, everybody expected another movie glorifying violence and sex, but it doesnt, its sincerity take it out of the lot and brings it into the world of good movies. Excellent directorial debut.
