Review of Hustle & Flow (2005) by Anthony C — 18 May 2008
I was expecting a decent movie because Terrence Howard is an incredibly gifted actor and just all around very intelligent. He's kind of like the black Robert Downey, Jr., if such a thing can be said (with the obvious exception to RDjr's wilder days) which makes them together in Iron Man interesting.
I've come to really enjoy Anthony Anderson, and have taken him as a serious actor ever since The Shield season 4. I'm not into rap that much myself, but really dug the songs in this movie and although the script was more about coming up (a pseudo rags-to-riches style tale) than a true generic musical biopic, it was very easy to get into.
I can't remember a movie before that had you caring about pimps and hoes as the main cast and despite how cliched the whole poor criminal aspiring to greatness almost is these days, seeing them as people as DJay tries to survive day to day and realizes his dream made for an extremely interesting movie.
I said before I expected a decent movie, I got a great one!
