Review of Hustle & Flow (2005) by Manny C — 16 Jan 2012
Music is seldom so raw and full of feeling on screen, anchored by a breakout performance from Terence Howard, which scored him an Oscar nod. Howard plays DJay, a pimp who waxes philosophical to his new girl, Nola (Taryn Manning) right before selling her off out of his Chevy.
DJay has dreams of rapping, and records songs in his makeshift home studio he shares with his expecting girlfriend (the amazing Taraji P. Henson) who sings the hooks. It's a take that has severe consequences for DJay, but for debuting director Craig Breward and Howard, it's a slam dunk.
