Review of Hustle & Flow (2005) by Eric O — 19 Mar 2008
There are few films I can remember that having seen years ago that have left an indelible impact on my mind, this is one. While not entirely original, the performances are beyond engrossing bringing to life the Memphis world.
Terrence Howard's performance as DJay is one of the single best pieces of this decade. He is not simply playing a broken down pimp, the drive in his eyes is always noticeable, the agressiveness of his character always seems to be harnessed, never fully expressed which is brilliant in showing his pain.
Also, this has to be one of the best supporting casts I've seen. Typically big names are brought in to liven a movie and each actor carries each other, but there is a certain livelihood to each character here, that every single supporting actor plays perfectly like they have something to prove.
This is not to mention that Craig Brewer has a great sense of place, the saturated colors to decrepit houses depict that DJay is living in an entire environment that is struggling. Also by no means does he condone pimping or prostitution rather that there is hope for everyone to make something of their lives.
The music is also believable which is key to the films success, I would totally believe DJay's verses if I heard them on the radio. My praise of this film may be hyperbole, but there are few movies that have such a strong impassioned heart that really inspire.
