Review of Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964) by Diane G — 15 Feb 2011
Scared the crap out of me as a kid, especially when the head comes bouncing down the stairs! Of course as an adult that all changes! One of those great over-the-top films with fun performances from all involved.
I especially like Agnes Moorehead who never fails to surprise me in the roles she did (as I only knew of her as a child from "Bewitched") and this one's a doozy! And I love Joseph Cotten hamming it up, as he's always so restrained -- and he sings! Of course Bette Davis never fails to entertain us; poor crazy woman driven over the edge by scheming Olivia de Havilland (although I still would have loved to have seen Joan Crawford doing her role; who wouldn't want to see those two aging movie queens battling for top spot -- who can chew up the scenery more?).
The mansion is incredible and the scenes inside are beautifully shot. A nice follow-up to "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" (also from a book by Henry Farrell AND again directed by Robert Aldrich).
Check it out; you won't be sorry!
