Review of Hush (2016) by Jesse O — 11 Apr 2016
I don't think anyone can really claim that this film offers a completely new experience when compared to all the other cat-and-mouse thrillers in existence. But I do think the film does add a new, more suspense-filled twist on the genre.
And that twist, essentially, is that the lead character is deaf-mute. It might seem like something minor, but it does actually work spades in execution. So often, in these films, you're used to the leads being aware where the villain is coming from at all times, whether from sight and sound.
So the fact that the lead character doesn't have that 'advantage' as it were makes the film a little more effective as a cat-and-mouse thriller, since you are aware, for the most part, of where the villain is coming from whereas the lead is completely unaware.
I thought that was actually pretty cool and it is, admittedly, a very small twist, but it's one that completely changes the dynamics of the film. This is a fairly straightforward thriller outside of the little twist I mentioned, but it's one that's really well-constructed and offers a brief, but very taut, experience.
The acting is strong as well and the film does contain a good amount of blood when it comes to the climax. Really, all in all, this is a very entertaining horror/thriller. I don't think it's gonna change the genre in any way, shape or form, but it is an enjoyable and smartly put together horror flick.
Not what I would call a great review, but it is what it is. Either way, this is an easy enough recommendation if you have Netflix.
