Review of Hush (2016) by David J — 23 Oct 2016
Stephen King, who was disapproving of Stanley Kubrick's masterful adaptation of "The Shining," seemed to have really liked "Hush" as he compared it to "Halloween" and "Wait Until Dark.
" How somebody who has penned classic horror could acclaim a dull film such as this one is beyond me. Much in the same vein as "You're Next," "Hush" is a home invasion horror with an interesting premise, one which lacks the fundamentals of horror - suspense and scares.
More disappointingly, "Hush" puts logic on hold and relies on cheap tactics to keep things interesting, such as ambient noise, a fraudulent conclusion, and a meaningless introduction to obviously expendable characters towards the film's climax.
Much like the serial killer, "Hush" toys with us, but only for it's own satisfaction. Having seen his other film, "Oculus," I know that Mike Flanagan has the potential to create a disturbing, effective horror film, but it seems that he's not quite there yet.
I do, however, want to take note of Kate Siegel's (Flanagan's wife) fantastic performance as the deaf protagonist.
