Review of Hush (2016) by Cjm868 — 16 May 2016
Yeah, having a deaf person be the victim of a home break-in and hunted by a murderous psychopath is an interesting yet gimmicky twist on the home-invasion movie. But take that away and it's no different from the rest; One interesting gimmick shouldn't define your movie.
The aforementioned murderous psychopath's motivations are very unclear. There is no discernible reason for why he's doing what he's doing. She has nothing of immense value for him to steal and she's not an obstacle preventing him from doing anything. I could not get past this, the whole movie this kept nagging me. Sure you could counter that with: "uh, yeah well he doesn't need any motivations or whatever because like they said in Scream: "it's a lot more scary when there's no motive"* you-know?".
1) This guy wasn't scary. 2) That's just lazy writing.
But you know what? Grievances aside I kind of like this movie. There is some steady tension built and I do feel for the main character and was interested to see how things would unfold.
*That is said in Scream but the killer in that did totally have a motive.
