Review of Husbands and Wives (1992) by Joshua H — 11 May 2011

I was pretty much shocked by how this movie's reflective, original, and realistic nature. This is an amazingly beautiful romantic movie whose storyline should be adopted by other movies that share the same genre. This is because most romantic comedy movies these days focus so much on happy endings and slapstick humour that there's absolutely nothing interesting about the story at all.

The documentary-styled movie also gives rise to a more realistic picture of today's marriages taht people often overlook. In addition, the characters feel SO alive in the movie that they seem to be engrossed in their own little world, and as if they're talking about their own personal life stories. This is especially for Sally whenever she tells us her true feelings to the counselor. It's just refreshing to watch a movie like this, that showcases the true nature of relationships and marriages.

The twist in the movie is also an interesting and major part of the movie, because it shows that not all marriages can work out and there is always some contrast between the life stories of different couples. I didn't see Woody Allen's fate coming, and what he said at the end of the movie was clearly reflective and beautiful. Some people are just better off single for some time during their midlife crisis. I also love how he abandoned Rain in order to work things out with his wife, just that when he realised his wife had fallen for another man he felt that he should've dated Rain. Hoewever, Rain's unique and complex character would definitely hurt him in the end, and therefore I love his fate at the end.

This movie should be watched by all couples as they may have unrealistic expectations or have been suppressing that desire to be with someone else. Divorce is never a good option, but it's better if the couple becomes happier without having to argue with each other all the time and make their children suffer.
