Review of Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) by Brandon W — 30 Sep 2016
Hunt for the Wilderpeople is directed and written by Taika Waititi who's directing the upcoming Marvel film Thor: Ragnarok, and it stars San Neill and Julian Dennison in an adventure dramedy about a kid that's a troublemaker with no family that is with his foster family.
Then when situations arise, the people from child service is taking Ricky (Julian Dennison) back, and his foster uncle and him are running away from them. I think when I saw What We Do in the Shadows, I want to see more of what Taika Waititi has done, and so with this, of course I wanted to see this.
Julian Dennison is so good in this with his comedic timing, intimidation, not an annoyance, and is just having a lot of fun. It actually has been years since I saw Sam Neill in a film, so it's cool to see him again, and he's at his A game in this since Jurassic Park where he's most famous at.
The movie, half the time, is just going to be the kid and his foster uncle walking around the forest, and so they are going to talk to each other and have chemistry. Luckily the writing by Taika Waititi is very good that the dialogue just comes out natural for both the kid and the adult that they work off pretty well together.
The plot is simple, but effective enough to wanting to know whether they get themselves out of it or not. The score is pretty good that it definitely has that indie feel to it that makes it stand out from other indie films while also being different from Hollywood films.
The people who are looking for the kid are also pretty funny and you can just tell that they are having a lot of fun trying to chase the kid down. The Hunt for the Wilderpeople is a fantastic film that I believe that Thor: Ragnarok is in good hands here.
