Review of Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) by Patricia W — 14 Sep 2017
Taika Waititi has done it again! Hunt for the Wilderpeople is an absolute gem that deserves more recognition than it got. A comedy from New Zealand with a lot of heart, Hunt for the Wilderpeople is about Ricky, a defiant city kid who is getting a fresh start with a foster family in the countryside.
However when tragedy strikes he and his uncle Hec go into the wild and a crazy man hunt ensues. This is such a fun film, Julian Dennison as Ricky is absolutely hilarious and charismatic and Sam Neill as the curmudgeonly Hec is wonderfully dry in his humour.
Rhys Darby also has a great little part as Psycho Sam and Rachel House as Paula is perfectly straight faced and funny as a child welfare worker who hates kids. The premise of the grumpy old man transformed by a loveable young scamp isn't exactly an original premise but this film hits such a good balance between the fantastical, humorous, sad and sweet that you can't help but love it.
