Review of Humshakals (2014) by Jasrick J — 19 Jun 2014
A mindless tale, the story is about Ashok (Saif ali khan) a rich business tycoon who has an uncle (ram kapoor) out to take his fortunes. Ashok also has a close friend Kumar (riteish). The uncle teams up with a doctor (nawwab shah) to hatch a plot but things take a turn when the duo discovers that both Ashok and his friend have got lookalikes but are mentally retarded. What happens from there forms the rest.
The director has come up with a mad storyline and while the presentation was rich, the narrative was pathetic. The dialogues were silly. The script was way below average and the screenplay made it worse. The background score was melodious and three songs were worth watching. Cinematography was the main strength to this film. Editing was required during the second half. Costumes were well designed to suit the royalty while the art department was majestic. Saif Ali Khan gave something new with this role but he was not fully suitable. Ram Kapoor gave a committed performance. The one to watch out for is Riteish Deshmukh, he was excellent. Bipasha Basu was sultry, Tamannah was smoking hot and extremely attractive, Esha Gupta was glamorous. But other than the songs girls had nothing to do. Another actor to watch out for is Satish Shah, he is simply superb. Nawwab Shah was natural, Chunky Pandey, Suresh Menon, Darshan Jariwala were not used properly.
It is common to expect there would be no logic in madcap entertainers but then there is also a limit which must not be crossed. In this film, the first few minutes is good and shows promise but later on, it becomes totally senseless. The interval break was a relief and the torture continues during the second half. Whacky comedy doesnâ??t mean a total brainless dump, it requires the right conviction. However, all that didnâ??t work here so the film actually bores.Film has a few laughs but you will cry more. Not recommend.
