Review of Humpday (2009) by Dave S — 28 Jun 2009
It's practically a crime that more people are going to see "Bruno" than will catch this one; the link between the two, of course, is uncomfortable laughter about sexuality. "Humpday" takes a sort of outlandish scenario and plays it exactly right, turning it into something low-key, genuine, and hysterically funny.
All three leads give great (and semi-improvised) performances, although Leonard does get sort of tripped up in doing a pseudo-Owen Wilson shtick for a while. Well directed, too, using handheld cameras and occasionally dim lighting in a far more effective manner than Noah Baumbach has recently.
(A somewhat arbitrary comparison point, aside from the fact that his stylization in "Margot at the Wedding" was irksome but here Shelton both puts similar techniques to better use and, incidentally, displays a stronger feel for interpersonal relations.
