Review of Humanoids from the Deep (1980) by James T — 13 Apr 2008
This film needed Tom Atkins.. or someone from the horror genre to pump it up a bit.
Rob Bottin's visual effects were kick ass though.
Not so much the creatures though, their tails were really hollow so it was easy to tell there were just people in suits in them, and their massive brains looked stupid.
I did like that the film tried to borrow from old 50s films... with its premise at least.
But near the end when all the creatures are coming out of the water attacking the carnival and raping the land women.. it got kinda stupid.
Besides the fact that they played the same screaming sound effect over and over and over.
I thought it was ridiculous that they just lit the water on fire..
Since apparently there were like.. 15000 Salmon with this super gene in them that made these sea monsters, I doubt that only like... 30 evolved?
So maybe they should have called the army or something.. but I guess that wasn't in the films budget.
The end was kind of ridiculous, but it worked for the most part.
The music was pretty good too, and the town was very believable.
The scummy town folk did a really good job making you believe they were those characters.
And some of the locations were really awesome, like the beach and the giant tree with the roots exposed.
Other than a few scares and some good blood effects. This film has not too much going for it.
Plus all the naked breast scenes actually started to get annoyingly repetitive...
