This was a late night staple on HBO during the early 80's and between the monsters and gratuitous nudity what more did a growing teen need?
It is a B-movie and it blatantly steals from Alien, especially the ending, but it knows what it is, high camp, so it works in the end, well as long as you are a teen boy.
Plus it has Doug McClure, the King of B Sci-Fi movies of the 70's, or at least anything written by Edgar Rice Burroughs.
