Review of Human Traffic (1999) by Yvonne Y — 19 Apr 2009
I might have enjoyed this film more if I had been part of the house movement in the 90s, or been up to my neck in drugs when I saw it; I was neither. A film for the those with a special interest in the 90s house movement, in other words.
It's a very conversation driven film, this one: it's not really the action that drives this film forward, but the ramblings of the main characters. These are also the main source of entertainment, and some of it is quite funny.
The end seems oddly rushed, though. Many story lines are left unresolved, and you get the sense that you as the viewer is just kicked out of the story. Not that there really seems like much to hang around for.
Human Traffic tries to be a time window to the house movement in the 90s, and at that I guess it is quite successful. As a film in itself, though, it is wanting.
