Review of Human Desire (1954) by Tibor B — 13 Mar 2008
Zola's railroad set novel was filmed by Renoir in the 30s and Lang updates the story to 50s middle America. Lang brought a strong, cynical edge to his US noir films which here takes the femme fatale to ambiguous extremes in Gloria Grahame's marvellously manipulative character.
Glenn Ford is also on form as the war veteran caught up in an intense web of jealousy, hatred and lust and surprisingly ends up relatively unscathed thanks to his integrity and rare ability to see through the seducing femme, rare in this genre!
