Review of Hum Tum (2004) by Kathryn C — 15 Aug 2012
Hum Tum is a fairly westernized film, compared to the average Bollywood fare. However, this seems to work to its advantage here as it tells the stories of the playful and naive Karan (Saif Ali Khan) and the beautiful Rhea (Rani Mukerji), who seems to be his very opposite. After a chance meeting on a flight to New York, they continue on with their individual lives. The film follows them as they manage to find each other in different places all over the world, learning more about each other and becoming better and better friends along the way.
Khanâ(TM)s performance shines, and he is successful in making Karan still lovable, despite his wily ways, and Mukerji is similarly flawless, bringing the lively, effervescent Rhea to find even her more vulnerable side. The dance numbers are well done, though perhaps slightly more lackluster compared to other, flashier films. However, the script is very good, with the humor sharp and the motives real.
