Review of Hulk Vs. (2009) by David F — 14 Mar 2009
Marvel has said this is their "thank you" to fans who have supported all their straight-to-DVD animated features thus far. I find it ironic then that this is their overall best yet. Giving fans two geek-tastic shorts consisting of the venerable "hero fights hero" shot of adrenaline is a smart move.
Hulk is a perfect character to start this "vs." series with (if it does well, it will be a series), ya just drop him anywhere and wait for the clouds of debri. Fortunately, the writers realized that it wouldn't be wise to just give us two slugfests, there's actually stories here! I'd say the Wolverine short works the best in story, character design and voice work.
It's a bloody blast to see them get the right tone for these characters. Bloody indeed. Really. The Thor short is fine. I wasn't thrilled about some of the character design. It's still top-notch animation but some of the voice acting doesn't quite fit and it's just a lil odd to see Hulk rampage through Asgard so easily.
I did like the Loki twist though and it was wicked seeing Hela. The DVD has some great commentaries for each and solid special features. Certainly for fans of the characters and not really for kids (especially the Wolverine short)! Nuff said.
