Review of Hulk (2003) by Paul G — 08 May 2013
The incredible Hulk is one of the most interesting and most uninteresting superheroes in all of the superhero universe, if that's possible. Even if it's not, it's the only way I can describe Bruce Banner. He's a very polarizing character, people either love the hero or hate him. I personally think he is a very interesting and cool superhero, but not in this movie.
This movie, right here, can't even be called a superhero movie, or an action film of that matter. It had about 20 minutes of actual Hulk smashing in it and the rest of the 2 hours were full of badly written dialogue and unsatisfactory acting. They tried to make some emotional depth and have you care about the characters more than in most comic book movies, but it pretty much just fell flat on it's face.
The acting prowess wasn't anything to be proud of either except for Nick Nolte who did a pretty great job with what little he had. The rest of the actors didn't bring much to the table, especially Eric Bana.
The stylistic choices in this movie were also pretty stupid and laughable. They tried to make it look like a comic book and none of it worked. They had different images on the screen at the same time and the images would twist and swing around, it was just stupid. The effects were pretty bad too. The Hulk's effect was the worst and same with the mutated dogs. Anything mutated looked bad. But the Hulk looked way too human like. I know the Hulk is supposed to look like a human but it just looked laughable. But the effect of the missiles and explosions looked good though.
So Hulk was a plain, stupid, badly written, poorly acted, and just a plain boring movie. It was supposed to be a superhero movie but it ended up just being a bad drama. It was just so bland and unappealing that I don't see how it could have ever gotten a fresh rating, even at 62%. Just go and watch the 2008 Edward Norton one. That's time well spent.
