Review of Hulk (2003) by Comic C — 05 Nov 2013
A fairly decent, and very different, comic book film, emphasising what makes Banner Hulk out (it's ironic this film was produced by Universal, as Lee's Hulk wouldn't seem out of place next to Frankenstein's Monster and the Wolfman, character-wise) until it runs into what is arguably the single worst ending ever: Hulk fights.
.. a Gamma Bubble?!?!? What the f---??? What's more, the performances are variable: Eric Bana is convincingly tortured but too understated, Jennifer Connelly is quite good, Josh Lucas and Sam Elliott are terrific, while Nick Nolte is awful, overacting on a biblical scale.
The much-derided FX are actually okay for the most part, better in some scenes (the fight versus the gamma dogs) than others (the green butterball bouncing through the desert). An interesting take on the character, but more a modern monster movie than a comic book adaptation.
.. with -- it must be reiterated, like the health warnings on cigarette packs -- the Worst. Ending. Ever.
