Review of Hulk (2003) by Danny O — 11 Aug 2014

We hardly see any hulk action in a film called Hulk. Instead, we get an oddly edited drama. Ang Lee was a bad choice for director. His style doesn't fit superhero movies at all. The effects are ok, the Hulk looks like a cartoon character.

This is a rare occasion where a director tries way too hard to make a great film and ends up making a forgettable one. The idea of giving Hulk a dramatic backstory is smart, if done well. It seems to loom over the whole production, and be more of the focus of the movie than, I don't know, the HULK.

The comic book style of shooting with small square frames moving across the screen and odd freeze frames were meant to be more stylistic, but they were very distracting. It isn't a terrible movie like some made lead you to believe, but it's a forgettable, cheesy, and often dull comic book adaptation.

Hulk gets 2/5 stars (C-).
