Review of Hula Girls (2006) by Chayanin T — 30 Jun 2007
First, I think Hula Girls is just a comedy film. I so surprised when I heard this film can beat Memories of Matsuko in Japanese Academy Award and it goes to Oscar's best Foreign Language Award instead of MOM.
After I saw it, I cried as same as while I'm watching MOM but another feeling. MOM made me feel sad and terrible for Matsuko's life, Hula Girls made me feel good and impressed.
Anyway, I still love MOM more than Hula Girls, because HL had some too-easy sequences which had no enough reason to tell me why it happened, just for make audiences cry. Example, the scene that Sayuri decided to dance even her father's going to die while her teacher just said everyone should back home, follow by the scene that coal's elders shouted to the teacher without listening to their girls, and teacher has to go away from this town.
Aoi Yu is great, I love her smiling, dancing and acting. So is Matsuyuki Yasuko.
