Review of Hugo (2012) by Derek H — 21 Aug 2014
A love letter to anyone who loves the movies, this is easily my favorite Scorsese. A sumptuously produced multi-layered musing on individual purpose, love, devastation and dreams, wrapped neatly around a paean to the pioneering French filmmaker Georges Méliès, masquerading as a children's tale.
It's deliberate pacing and minimalist dialogue takes a few minutes to get to get used to, but every beautiful frame is there for a reason. This has Oscar written all over it.
