Review of Hugo (2012) by Skyler B — 22 Jan 2013
Undeniably a good movie. That's not up for debate.
Now, how much it resonates with you is a different matter altogether. For me, personally, the themes of this film I found much more alluring and relatable in "Super 8". Although, I loved the twist/reveal of who Ben Kingsley's character was and depending on your film knowledge, it might tickle you as much as it did me.
I still find it hard to accept Sacha Baron Cohen as an actor, he is so type-cast in my head. However, I do love a good unrequited love story. But he did not make a very formidable antagonist.
Both child actors are very good, but again, a strength I felt was better in "Super 8".
I was also turned off by Scorsese's film restoration propaganda which cheapened the film and made it feel insincere. But I know his intentions are good and it's hard to chastise someone who is dedicated to a noble cause.
Nonetheless, a good film I definitely recommend.
